Adding a Touch of Nature to Peds ED

In this edition of Design Stories, we showcase a healthcare project for a pediatric unit in Florida. The design firm contacted Olee Creative for help in transforming their design vision into a customized window film. Read on to learn about the project challenges and see the final results.

The Challenge

Architecture and interiors planning firm TMPartners was hired by Osceola Regional Medical Center to design a new pediatric emergency services unit. The patient exam rooms specified large aluminum clad glass sliding doors. TMPartners wanted to add design elements to the glass panels for both safety and visual interest. The design vision called for adding a touch of nature to soften the hard surfaces while extending the natural outdoor beauty of the region to the interior. Heather Carlson with TMPartners had identified an OleeVue window film (Lakeside 440) that came close to what she had envisioned, but she felt it needed something extra to make it perfect for her client.

The Process

Heather had worked with the Olee Creative team before and knew Olee could customize any design pattern. She scheduled a meeting with an Olee design consultant and described what she wanted to accomplish. The lakeside pattern included willows and grasses that could be found in many natural settings in the area. Missing from the pattern were animals normally found in the region. Heather felt adding animals to the pattern would be a positive distraction for the children, create a stronger connection with nature and add more visual interest to the
graphics.

To reinforce the regional nature theme, the animals selected for the graphic would have to be recognizable and be indigenous to the marshlands. While snakes and alligators were indigenous, they would instill anxiety instead of relieving it. Instead, turtles, birds and other animals were selected for their beauty and the curiosity they create among children.

Shapes were more important than details, so the Olee team sourced silhouette patterns of the birds and turtles. The shapes were instantly recognizable, yet the patients could still imagine the details in their minds.

The Olee team worked to properly scale the animal images to fit the design and be realistic. They also tested color combinations and opacity of the silhouettes. Actual size samples were printed for the client to review and approve.

The Result

"Working with your team is always enjoyable and expectations of the quality produced is outstanding!"
- Heather Carlson, IIDA, TMPartners, PLLC

Working together, TMPartners and Olee Creative were able to find the perfect balance using a translucent grey animal silhouette layered over the contrasting white translucent grasses and willows. The scale and proportion of the animals to the grasses worked perfectly. Dragonflies were part of the original pattern and nicely complimented the newly added animals.

Bring us your project challenges

While there are many window films available in the market, nearly all of them are WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) designs.

In contrast, every OleeVue pattern is a starting point, allowing you to fine tune the design with 8 standard options or fully customize the design to fit your needs. Another key difference you will find with Olee Creative is the ability to bring your own design. Our team will transform your design or image onto film or graphic panels cut precisely to the dimensions you need.

While other choices in the market may limit your design vision, we like to think Olee Creative helps you fully realize your design vision.

Bring us your design challenges and let the Olee Creative team help you solve them.
