Bring the Outside In

How Biophilic Design helped this Healthcare client achieve the ideal result.

It is virtually impossible to design a building in which every window has a million dollar view. Sometimes a window will face a brick wall, sometimes the view will be the HVAC equipment on a neighboring building. In this edition of Creative Design Stories, our client came to us with a similar challenge.

The Challenge

Our client wanted to hide the rooftop just outside the window and instead, provide patients with a more uplifting view that supports well-being while still allowing natural light into the space.

The Process

The Olee Creative team introduced the concept of biophilic design - the concept of introducing images of nature to reduce stress, promote well-being and expedite healing.

The Olee Creative design team took into consideration the use of the space as well as adjacent spaces. Understanding the dimensions of the space was critical to selecting an image that would match the scale of the area.

The Olee team then reviewed carefully curated images with the client, discussing attributes of color, scale, light opacity and integration into overall design.

After balancing the design requirements, the client and Olee team agreed that a beautiful forest image would be the perfect fit for the space, essentially bringing the outside in. Olee Creative then adjusted the image into 8 individual image segments for a perfect fit with the dimensions of each window pane. The image was then printed on translucent film and professionally installed for the client.

The Result

The client was thrilled with the transformation. Patients and staff are instantly transported from the real world into a peaceful, serene forest where the sun is always shining and the flowers always in bloom.


On the surface, the design provides everyone with an opportunity to pause, immerse themselves in nature and relax - even if just for a moment. Thanks to biophilic design, we also know that the benefits are far greater - the image and design are destined to help patients lower anxiety, improve well-being and expedite healing.
